Physiotherapy in Spinal Cord Injury

Spinal cord injuries are an acute or chronic condition that occurs when the nerves coming from the brain are exposed to pressure or cut for various reasons along the course of the spinal cord.

Approximately 1200 to 1400 cases of spinal cord injuries occur annually in our country. One of the biggest reasons for these cases is in-vehicle and out-of-vehicle traffic accidents. In addition, sports accidents, injuries with cutting tools, and pressure from various regional tumors can also cause spinal cord injuries.

The most important factor to increase the recovery rate in spinal cord injuries is early treatment. Studies have shown that recovery rates are higher in patients treated during the spinal shock period.

After a detailed physical examination of patients diagnosed with spinal cord, an appropriate program is created for the patient. These programs mainly include exercise, electrotherapy, occupational therapy, robotic rehabilitation and urinary incontinence treatment.

Exercise aims to prevent muscle atrophy, prevent muscle shortening with stretching movements, and correct deformities that may occur with various orthoses.

Electrotherapy aims to strengthen the muscles by stimulating them with the help of electric current.

The aim is to re-teach patients the walking pattern by using robotic devices.

The holistic aim of physiotherapy services is to increase the quality of daily life of patients with spinal cord diagnosis by mobilizing them in the early period.
